How Do I Handle This Situation?
This (or a similar event) has happened to me several times.
I work retail, so I see quite a few people buying diet books. For some reason many people seem to feel the need to justify their purchase.
Customer: I have a tendancy to be overweight…
Me: Oh, I know how that is!
Customer: No you don’t! You can’t understand because you’re so slim.
Well, I do have a tendancy to be overweight, but I control it by exercising 6 days a week and watching what I eat. I don’t feel that I should say this to people because they might think I am judging them. But I don’t want to let it go either; I dislike being told what I know and what I don’t know. How do I handle this situation gracefully? (this isn’t always just with customers, sometimes it’s random people I run into!) It seems a weird thing to happen, but it has happened enough that I would like some guidelines on how to handle it.
Thank you in advance for your advice!
Tough situation. I’m overweight and I don’t think I’d find myself saying that. If I’m buying a book on weight loss and I’m overweight, why state the obvious?
Besides that explanation is better used when I feel guilty for buying something sweet.
But IF for some reason I felt the need to state the painfully obvious comment, and it was to a thin girl, and she responded the way you did it probably would bother me. I’ll be honest.
I think the most graceful way to respond to that comment is to say something like “I hope this helps you reach your goal” or “I’ve noticed some other customers have purchased this book…” something like that.
But devil’s advocate for a moment? The comment that you made about controlling it by exercising and watching what you eat does sound judgemental to a girl who is overweight in large part (no pun intended) because of medication and depression. Could i exercise more and eat better? Sure. But is it the same situation as someone who might have a few extra pounds? Not at all.
Obviously I had to make some assumptions about your situation but the point is, in a short interaction like what you’re talking about, those assumptions are made and that’s what influences the conversation. And trust me, probably most overweight people are coming to you with that weight loss book with a chip on their shoulder so be kind, they’re trying, right?
But maybe these situations aren’t weight-related only so really you are just looking for a fail-safe way to gracefully exit these conversations. So finding something to say like I mentioned (“hope this helps you,” “hope you find some useful information,” or offer something like “did you know you can look up online book reviews”) is probably the best way to go, even when you feel like the customer is overpowering you.
